TMJ Surgery

What Is TMJ Surgery?

TMJ surgery includes a range of procedures used to restore joint function, reduce pain, and improve mandibular movement when non-surgical treatment is no longer effective.

When Is Surgery Recommended?

Surgery may be considered for patients with:

* Persistent TMJ pain
* Limited mouth opening
* Disc displacement
* Degenerative arthritis
* Ankylosis
* Condylar deformity
* Failed conservative treatment

Types of TMJ Surgery

Treatment options range from arthrocentesis and arthroscopy to open joint surgery and total joint replacement, depending on the diagnosis.

Total Joint Replacement

Custom TMJ prostheses are indicated for selected patients with severe joint destruction, ankylosis, multiple previous surgeries, tumors, or advanced degenerative disease.

Long-Term Function

Appropriately selected patients often experience significant improvement in pain, jaw movement, and quality of life following TMJ surgery.

TMJ Surgery

Temporomandibular joint (TMJ) disorders may cause pain, limited mouth opening, joint noises, facial asymmetry, and functional impairment. Surgical treatment is considered when conservative therapies fail or when structural joint disease is present.

Advanced surgical management of temporomandibular joint disorders, including minimally invasive procedures and total joint replacement when indicated.

Help & Support

Frequently Asked Questions

When is TMJ surgery necessary?

Surgery is considered when conservative treatments fail and structural joint disease significantly affects function or quality of life.

What is TMJ replacement surgery?

Total joint replacement involves replacing the damaged temporomandibular joint with a patient-specific prosthesis designed to restore function.

Will I have visible scars?

Most minimally invasive procedures leave little or no visible scarring. Open procedures are planned to minimize visible scars whenever possible.

How long is the recovery?

Recovery varies according to the procedure, but rehabilitation and physiotherapy play an important role in restoring jaw function.
