Genioplasty
What Is Genioplasty?
Genioplasty is a surgical procedure that modifies the position or shape of the chin to improve facial proportions and lower facial harmony. Depending on the diagnosis, the chin may be advanced, set back, lengthened, shortened, or repositioned asymmetrically.
Who Is a Candidate?
Candidates may present with:
* Receding chin
* Prominent chin
* Chin asymmetry
* Vertical chin excess
* Vertical chin deficiency
* Facial disproportion despite normal jaw position
Surgical Planning
Treatment planning includes facial analysis, photographs, CBCT imaging, and virtual surgical planning when indicated to determine the optimal chin position.
The Procedure
Sliding genioplasty is performed through an incision inside the mouth, leaving no visible external scar. The chin bone is repositioned and stabilized using titanium plates and screws.
Recovery
Most patients experience temporary swelling and numbness during the early healing period. Regular follow-up appointments monitor bone healing and soft tissue adaptation.

Is genioplasty performed inside the mouth?
Yes. The procedure is typically performed through an intraoral incision, avoiding visible facial scars.
Can genioplasty be performed without jaw surgery?
Yes. Genioplasty may be performed as a standalone procedure when jaw position is satisfactory but chin projection or symmetry requires correction.
Will I have numbness after surgery?
Temporary numbness of the lower lip or chin may occur during healing. Sensation usually improves gradually over time.
Does genioplasty change my bite?
No. Isolated genioplasty changes the position of the chin but does not alter the dental bite or jaw occlusion.
